Charles Ullman is a specialist in North Carolina family law

RALEIGH, NC, September 01, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Wake County divorce attorney Charles Ullman appeared on WRAL-TV news to discuss North Carolina’s law pertaining to alienation of affection, which was cited in a recent high-profile civil case.

In June, a man filed a lawsuit against Tim Moore, speaker of the N.C. House of Representatives, alleging alienation of affection. An alienation of affection claim allows a husband or wife to sue their spouse’s alleged paramour for monetary damages on the grounds that the paramour has destroyed a loving marriage and deprived them of the love and affection of their spouse.

Scott Lassiter, a former Apex town council member, claimed in the alienation of affection lawsuit that Moore had an adulterous extramarital affair with Lassiter’s wife Jamie Liles Lassiter, and caused the destruction of the Lassiters’ marriage. Moore and Jamie Liles Lassiter denied the allegation. The lawsuit, which sought monetary damages from Moore, has since been resolved, The News & Observer reported.

North Carolina is one of six states that allow alienation of affection cases, said Mr. Ullman, who is recognized as a Board-certified Specialist in North Carolina Family Law by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization.

Mr. Ullman estimated that 500 to 600 cases of alienation of affection are filed each year in North Carolina. Mr. Ullman said alienation of affection cases can be successful. When preparing alienation of affection claims, Mr. Ullman said he looked for evidence of a long-term involvement between the spouse and paramour and multiple acts of infidelity.

“You look into it and make sure you have a valid claim that the client wants to pursue,” Mr. Ullman told WRAL. “They can be successful.”
