The final resting places are in jeopardy due to how the engineering is done for the plots

NEW YORK, NY, July 14, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — Many monuments are collapsing in the cemetery due to the cemetery employees using excavators and heavy equipment to dig the graves instead of having them dug by hand, which has been the standard for years. The vibrations from the tires rattle the ground, causing the tombstones to topple over.

In addition, it has come to light that when the cemetery workers use the heavy machinery, they run them over freshly buried grave sites. It is disgrace to those buried there, and the weight of the heavy machinery exceeds the permissible load of the cement, which in turn crushes the cement, causing the monument to collapse.

To prevent water from flooding the plots, laying a cement slab is critical. As per NYS regulations, without the slab, a headstone may not be installed because the cement strengthens the structure.

Upon meeting with the ABCN in August 2020, Mount Carmel Cemetery agreed to allow ABCN to hire a licensed engineering company to investigate the situation. The cemetery agreed that whatever needed repairs the engineer found would be done. Upon inspection, the engineer noted several violations and instances of negligence. As of today, July 13, 2022, almost two years after the engineer’s inspection, Mt. Carmel Cemetery has not made good on its word. They have completely ignored all outreach to discuss this matter and refuse to provide a timeline for when they will remedy the situation.

In addition to their stonewalling, the cemetery is refusing to allow the families to bury their loved ones in accordance with the Jewish laws and customs which they have done for hundreds of years. This is a very difficult thing to accept. A cemetery steeped in Jewish history should welcome the customs by which a Jewish burial must be done. Their defense is based on a house of cards, claiming that the laws and customs are not in accordance with NYS laws. However, this is a fallacy. Upon further investigation done by ABCN, the only reason the Cemetery is not allowing compliance is due to their own prejudices toward the Jewish community. This is simply intolerable.

We call upon communities and our politicians to make our voice heard and our request known. Our goal is to give dignity to those buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery.

ABCN – All Bukharian Community Network, feels it must bring to light any violations or egregious wrongdoings. We must stand up and protect those that cannot stand up for themselves and make sure the Mount Carmel Cemetery accepts responsibility for the fallen tombstones and proceeds to rectify the situation by hiring the engineering company to create new plans. We call upon communities and our politicians to make our voice heard and our request known. Our goal is to give dignity to those buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
