Empowered Women In Medicine Awards is given by the Patient Preferred Physicians Network
MONTCLAIR, NJ, November 22, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Dr. Elissa Santoro has been awarded the “Empowered Women in Medicine” recognition by the esteemed medical society Patient Preferred Physicians & Practitioners for her leadership and unwavering commitment to medicine.
Dr. Santoro has over five decades of experience and is an award-winning oncologist and breast cancer specialist treating patients at the Montclair Breast Center in Montclair, NJ.
The Empowered Women in Medicine Award is given to a select group of women physicians who have demonstrated leadership in their field. These women are true beacons of inspiration to aspiring physicians. They are committed to educating others and have a proven record of achieving excellence in patient care.
With an impressive fifty years of medical experience as an oncologist, Dr. Santoro was, in fact, the first medical professional in New Jersey to specialize in oncology and breast health and the first woman surgeon at St Vincent’s Hospital. Thus, she has undoubtedly been a vehicle of change in medicine. Dedicated to her patients, she treated breast cancers at the prestigious RWJS St Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, for 47 years before retiring (for six weeks). She was graciously asked to return to the field to share her expertise at the Montclair Breast Center, New Jersey. Having helped train the center’s founder some years prior, Dr. Santoro saw a perfect opportunity to return to the field and continue doing what she loves most: caring for women with breast cancer.
As a result of her unwavering commitment to the medical profession, Dr. Santoro has been featured on several national and international medical platforms throughout her career. Recognized as a “Top Breast Oncology Specialist,” she was published in Preferred Health Magazine’s Best in Medicine, 2019; she has appeared on the Thomson Reuters billboard in Times Square as a “Patient Preferred Oncologist,” 2018 and 2019; was nominated a “Patient Preferred Breast Consultant,” by her peers, 2018, and has been recognized by Castel Connolly Top Doctors, 2017. Dr. Santoro was also awarded “New Jersey Top Doc” and the first individual to achieve “Outstanding Woman” in the field of medicine, now named the Christine Todd Whitman Award.
To stay abreast of the latest developments in her field, Dr. Santoro is affiliated with several medical organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and the Medical Society of New Jersey as well as the American Cancer Society to name just a few. In addition, she was named the first woman president of the division of the North Jersey American Cancer Society, which demonstrates her strong dedication and devotion to the profession.
Dr. Santoro’s passion for helping others began at the beginning of her education. In 1965, she graduated from the Women’s Medical College in Pennsylvania with a medical degree while completing a surgical internship, further improving her time management skills. She furthered her medical education in New York City at St Vincent’s Hospital, where she completed her surgical residency. Dr. Santoro was the first woman to be chief surgical resident, which opened the door for other women doctors. Besides all of this, she was awarded an ACS Postdoctoral Cancer Training Fellowship at St. Vincent’s Hospital.
Dr. Santoro also received a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer training from the National Institute of Health at the New York Medical College, where she was on the faculty. Additionally, Dr. Santoro is board-certified by the American Board of General Surgery in the field of General Surgery.
